Dow Gardens Butterfly House

The Dow Gardens Butterfly House is a Spectacular Thing to Do!

The annual “Butterflies in Bloom” exhibit at Dow Gardens is a captivating event transforming the conservatory into a vibrant sanctuary of fluttering colors. From early March to mid-April, visitors can witness thousands of butterflies from around the world emerging from their chrysalises, feeding, and gracefully flying within the tropical environment.

The Dow Gardens Butterfly House is an interactive exhibit that offers a unique opportunity to observe these delicate creatures up close and learn about their life cycles. If you’re lucky, they may even land on your open palm or shoulder. It’s an unforgettable experience that brings the magic of nature to life, making it a must-see for anyone visiting during the spring season.

Reservations are required for the Dow Gardens Butterfly House. You’ll be given a specific time slot, as it’s best to limit the amount of visitors inside the conservatory. This only adds to the magic, as you’ll be walking through the warm tropical world without worrying about crowds or excess noise.

While the Dow Gardens Butterfly House is only open for a limited time, there are so many things to do here all year round. Here are the other main attractions at Dow Gardens:

  1. The 1.5-mile Forest Canopy Walk is an essential experience! It features three branches, each leading to a unique viewing platform. Visitors can enjoy a stunning view of a forest pond from 25 feet up, explore a large cargo net nestled among spruce trees at the same height, and take in an orchard view from a 40-foot-high platform with a glass floor and railings.
  2. The curated garden areas are the perfect place to see butterflies in the wild! There’s a Wildflower Meadow, Color Garden, Rose Garden, and more. Spring is the ideal time to see Dow Gardens in full bloom. If you’d like a guided tour, contact the establishment in advance. Maps are at the welcome center.
  3. There are multiple bridges to cross at Dow Gardens. One of the most photographed is the red bridge designed by Alden Dow. These geometric structures are inspired by Japanese architecture and gardens.
  4. After you’ve explored the Dow Gardens Butterfly House, head out and hit the trails that meander through the property. Head to the cafe on-site for coffee, sweet treats, or picnic supplies!
  5. Dow Gardens is currently undergoing a major construction project, culminating in the opening of a brand-new Welcome Center. This building will expand the property’s presence and allow for larger gatherings at the botanic gardens. Dow Gardens is open even while construction finishes up.
